Subject Overview

Teaching and Learning

At Yarlside we believe that pupils should develop a love for learning languages; we strive to encourage pupils’ curiosity of languages, providing an opening to other cultures and deepening their understanding of the world.  Our intention is to prepare pupils for a smooth transition into learning a language at secondary school and for them be equipped to study and work in other countries.

French is taught throughout Key Stage 2 through units of work that include key MFL linguistic concepts and previously learnt language concepts to enable children to build on known themes and vocabulary.  The core content overview outlines substantive and disciplinary knowledge and key vocabulary that children will learn throughout each block of work.  This includes the vocabulary, phonics and grammatical constructs that children will learn, as well as the opportunities to develop their reading, writing and oracy skills.
