At Yarlside Academy, we not only nurture a love of learning and academic achievement, we also equip our pupils with the personal and social skills that will enable them to achieve in an ever changing world.
We teach the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships. The children learn the principles of respectful relationships and how to keep themselves safe including online. Part of this is delivered through the KidSafe scheme. We help them to understand and manage their feelings and appreciate the changes that will happen to them as they get older.
The children are taught how to recognise and talk about their emotions and are given strategies to help them cope such as mindfulness and relaxation. They are taught to be aware of their own bodies and needs and where to seek help and support if required.
In health education, we educate the children on the importance of exercise, diet and looking after their bodies. They are taught about the facts related to legal and illegal substances, their associated risks and how to make wise choices. Visiting health professionals help to enhance the curriculum.
In addition to the theoretical knowledge, practical experiences and role play scenarios covered in class, the pupils at Yarlside Academy also work closely with the local community. We host Harvest teas, coffee mornings and special assemblies in addition to working closely with STEM organisations and other schools on science and engineering projects. A wide range of professional visitors work with the children from health professionals to key figures in the local community.
