At Yarlside Academy we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to get children off to a flying start with their literacy. RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.
Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.
The children are assessed and grouped according to their ability. They will work with a teacher or teaching assistant who have all been fully trained to deliver the RWI programme. At the end of each half term the children will be assessed again and put into new groups. In addition to the Read, Write Inc programme the children will also be working on writing skills in their classes with their own class teacher.

On our shelves we have a range of reading genres from the Oxford Reading Tree collections including Sounds and Letters, Floppy Phonics, Biff, Chip and Kipper Stories, Songbirds, The Project X, Traditional Tales, Time Chronicles, Treetops – Myths and Legends, True Stories, Classics, Graphic Novels, Non-fiction and the Snapdragons series.
As well as teaching the skills necessary to become confident readers, we have our own library full of exciting books. We have a Junior Librarian System in the school library which enables school to loan books at their leisure.
All children are able to take books home to read with an adult, this shared learning helps children to practice their reading skills and develop a lifelong love of reading.
